Q: WHAT IS THE TRADITIONAL TABLE?
A: The Traditional Table is a healthy food fundraiser that gives you an opportunity to buy organic & sustainable groceries every month and allows your school to get a portion of the sales!! We offer pastured, organic meats & eggs, sprouted grain breads, maple syrup and raw honey, unrefined coconut oil and other healthy foods like line caught tuna, tomatoes in glass jars, gluten free pastas, and more. We look at what people have eaten for thousands of years in order to learn what to eat now to get and stay healthy! We try to add new things every month so check us out often. As our program grows we hope to source more companies and farms that will offer foods such as fresh produce, traditionally fermented foods and more!
Q: HOW IS THIS FUNDRAISER DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FOOD FUNDRAISERS?
A: First, almost all of our items are organic. Some items may not be certified organic, but will still be grown or created with organic/sustainable methods or ingredients. That means no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, no irradiation, and most importantly, NO GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms). All the animal products come from wild caught or pastured animals, so they are out in nature eating what they were created to eat.
Second, many of our items are locally grown or produced. That means you are supporting your local economy, local farmers, and local businesses as well as your school!!
Third, this program was started by a Sussex mom who has a passion for getting nutrient-dense food into the homes of families to improve their health. No corporation in the middle means more money for the producers and your school!
Q: WHY WOULD I WANT TO EAT ORGANIC / SUSTAINABLE / LOCAL FOOD?
A: What you put in and on your body greatly affects your health…positively or negatively. Our bodies were created to be fueled by whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, properly prepared grains, pastured/wild caught animal products, and healthy fats. Our bodies were NOT designed to live off chemicals, pesticides/herbicides, genetically modified organisms, preservatives, artificial colors, highly processed fats and refined sugar. When we fuel our body in that way, health problems occur. Food allergies, skin conditions, behavior problems, autoimmune diseases and even cancer can be all be caused by, or at least greatly affected by, what we eat.
The same foods that are better for our bodies are also better for the environment. Less chemicals on our food means less chemicals in our soil and water. Sustainable farming practices focus on putting nutrients back into the soil and giving animals everything they need to stay healthy, so that food is actually more nutritious and less resources are used to grow it. Getting food from sources in our community means less resources used to transport the food. So you can see how simple changes in your diet can have a profound impact on your health AND on your environment!
Q: HOW DO I ORDER?
A: Simply order online and then send your check to school to complete your order. At this time we cannot accept online payments. Even if you aren’t ready to place an order, you can create an account at our online store so that you will receive email reminders when the monthly orders go live or are due! We think you will be surprised how fast and easy the ordering process is!
Q: WHO CAN ORDER FROM THE TRADITIONAL TABLE?
A: Anyone! Please share this with community members, friends, and family. Your loved ones AND the school benefit!
Q: WHY SHOULD I BUY THESE ITEMS FROM THE TRADITIONAL TABLE INSTEAD OF FROM THE GROCERY STORE?
A: The first and most obvious reason is that buying from The Traditional Table supports your school! But also, many (or most!) of these items will not be available at your local grocery store. Several of the products are only available directly from the farmer or through The Traditional Table! Some products can be found at one of the organic grocery stores in the area , but not all of the stores carry all of these products. So you would have to travel to 2 – 4 farms and stores to get everything we have here! And even then, it will most likely be MORE EXPENSIVE at the store!!
Q: WHAT IF I WANT MORE INFORMATION ON THESE FARMS/BUSINESSES?
A: The companies are listed on the website and we encourage you to look them up and get to know your farmers.
Q: HOW DO I GET MY FOOD?
A: Order pick up will be about a week after the orders & payments are turned in. Pick up is usually at your school, after school. Bring a bag, box, or cooler to carry your items, and head home with your delicious goodies! If you cannot make it to school at that time, please let us know. We do not have the space to store orders overnight, but you can either arrange for a friend to take your order home or a late pick up in another location MAY be available. PLEASE NOTE that the meat comes frozen, is stored in coolers with ice packs once it arrives at school, and gets pulled out of the coolers as the food is sorted. The longer it is out of the freezer, the greater the possibility it will start to thaw around the edges. Though it is still perfectly safe to eat, we just want you to be aware of this information.
Q: WHO SORTS ALL THE FOOD FOR PICK UP?
A: After the food is delivered to school a group of volunteers sorts it into individual orders. And THEY NEED YOUR HELP!! Would you be willing to help us ONE TIME? Or even once a month? Please contact the person in charge of the fundraiser at your school if you would like to serve your school in this way! Thank you so much!!
Q: I HAVE A QUESTION, COMMENT, OR A PRODUCT SUGGESTION. WHO DO I CONTACT?
A: If you have questions/comments/suggestions about the companies or products, contact Colleen Boehm at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: I’D LIKE TO BRING THIS FUNDRAISER TO MY CHILD’S SCHOOL(S)! HOW DO I DO THAT?
A: Great question! Just contact Colleen Boehm at email@example.com and let me know that you are interested. We can begin the conversations about whether this fundraiser might work at your school! Please remember, it’s just one Sussex mom behind the scenes here, working with some amazing local farms and businesses! I want to help as many families as I can, but growth takes some time to work out the kinks. The first step is to let me know you are truly interested. So far, the schools that have done it have found it to be a blessing to the families who purchase, and a blessing to the Home & School / PTO budget!!
